a. Life cycle - Life cycle is the stage of development of an organism from it's beginning to s**ual maturity. Most of the insects have four stages in their life cycle. They are egg, larva, pupa and adult.

b. Caterpillar - The larva of a butterfly is called a caterpillar. It has a segmented body, hairs and looks like a worm. Caterpillar has legs but does not have wings. Its very active and eats a lot.

c. Cocoon - A cocoon or puparium is a jelly substance that covers a pupa. Inside cocoon, the pupa cannot move and remain inactive. The cocoon protects the pupa from an outer environment.

d. Pupa - The caterpillar inside the cocoon or puparium is called the pupa. The pupa cannot move and remain inactive inside cocoon until it breaks. Pupa is protected by cocoon from an outer environment.

5. Answer the following questions.

a. How is a butterfly a useful insect?

Answer: Butterfly is a useful insect because it helps to complete the life cycle of plants by transferring pollen grains.

b. How do butterfly eggs stick in leaves?

Answer: A glue like substance stick the eggs of a butterfly in the leaves.

c. Which stage of an insect grows actively and eats a lot?

Answer: Larva stage of an insect grows actively and eats a lot.

d. Explain the life cycle of a butterfly.

Answer: The life cycle of butterfly complete in four stages. i.e. egg, larva, pupa and adult/butterfly.

i. Egg: It is the first stage of life cycle of a butterfly. A mature female butterfly lay eggs in leaves.

ii. Larva: It is the second stage of life cycle of a butterfly. The larva of a butterfly is called caterpillar. Larva grows actively and eats a lot.

iii. Pupa: It is the third stage of life cycle of a butterfly. The caterpillar stops feeding and produces jelly substance from its mouth. The jelly substance wraps and covers it. The cover is called cocoon. A caterpillar inside a cocoon is called pupa.

iv. Adult: After few days, cocoon breaks and small butterfly comes out it is the last sage of life cycle of a butterfly. After they become mature and getting fertilized by male butterfly, they started laying eggs.

e. How long does it take to complete the life cycle of a butterfly?

Answer: It takes about seven days/one week to complete the life cycle of butterfly.
